On September 20, 2019, Professor Fu Chengshuang, a full-time researcher of the World Modern History Research Center of Nankai University, was invited to the School of History of Jiangxi Normal University to be a guest at the Lecture of World History Masters. The topic of the lecture was The Cultural Other: North American Indians in the Eyes of Whites

The academic report on the changes of human image.

First, Professor Fu Chengshuang discussed the historical changes in the image of North American Indians in the eyes of white people from noble savages to bloodthirsty savages in modern times.

The former represents an innocent, simple, and healthy Indian image, while the latter is endowed with treacherous, dirty, barbaric, lazy and almost all negative connotations despised by Christian society.

Later, I deeply analyzed the historical reasons for the changes in the image of white Indians, and believed that North American Indians’ dualistic images of noble savages and bloodthirsty savages in the hearts of white people were actually a subjectively shaped one by whites.

An image of the other that is different from the us culture.

Finally, Professor Fu settled on the eco-Indian image that has appeared since the 1960s, and believes that the emergence of this new image is actually a variant of the traditional noble Indian image after the rise of the global environmentalist movement.

Professor Fu came to the conclusion: Whether it is the historical noble barbarians and bloodthirsty barbarians or the modern and contemporary ecological Indians, they are not so much a true reflection of North American Indian culture.

In order to achieve their own goals, the users stereotyped the culture of North American Indians from the perspective of others, which reflected the racist plot and cultural prejudice of the white Christian culture to the Indian culture.

After the report, Professor Fu had further exchanges with some teachers and students, and exchanged views with colleagues from Jiangxi Normal University in world history on the current double-class discipline construction and talent echelon construction.
